Why is legislation regarding gmos important?

Here in Hawaii, we need better protection of our crops that have cultural significance and provide economic stability for local farmers.

What important gmo legislation was introduced in hawaii in 2007?

Taro

Senate Bill 958, placing a five year moratorium on planting, field trials, and labratory experimentation of GMO taro, passed through the Senate. SB958 then moved to the House where it awaits its final hearing in the House Agricultural Committee during the 2008 session.

House Bill 1577, placing a five year moratorium on the outdoor planting and outdoor field trials of GMO coffee in the state of Hawaii, passed the House of Representatives with a vote of 45 yes, 4 no , 2 excused. It has crossed over to the Senate and waits for a joint hearing with ENE/WAH, (Energy and the Environment and Water, Land, Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs) in the 2008 session.
