A Call to Action

We are putting out a statewide Call to Action to protect Haloa the taro, at the opening of the next State Legislature in January 2008.  This will be a major statewide effort calling for support to pass HB 704, which places a moratorium on any genetic modification of taro in Hawaii.

The University of Hawaii and Corporate researchers have forcefully insert foreign genes into the taro.  The Hawaiians and taro farmers have sounded a resounding NO!  Yet Speaker of the House of Representatives Calvin Say, and House Agriculture committee chairman Clift Tsuji, stopped HB 704 last year.  They would not even allow the bill to be heard.  This was a tremendous insult to Hawaiians and taro farmers.

Hawaiians consider Haloa the taro a family member (Ohana), the first born in their genealogical chants.  Taro farmers want to protect their economic livelihood.  Genetically modified plants (GMO) are considered a higher health risk by the National Academy of Sciences.  Containment of GMO plants cannot be guaranteed as widespread unexplained contamination of rice, corn and papaya has occurred nationally, causing economic problems.

Ku! Stand up and take action to protect Haloa the taro, our health, environment and economy. Please forward this KU’E to groups and friends.
